Chapter 14

“Constables Archer and McLeod, in my office, please.”

Ben and Sue exchanged restrained quizzical glances and shrugged their shoulders in unison like synchronised swimmers.

“What’s up now?” Ben whispered, all the while surmising that it couldn’t be all that bad or it was mildly horrific if they were both being summoned by the shift supervisor.

“Don’t know,” Sue murmured back as she raised her eyebrows and widened her expression.

“Yes, Corp,” she acknowledged out loud.

“Received a note from Sechelt GIS. I understand that you helped solve their murder case, Ben, despite the fact that you couldn’t ID the deceased. Well done!”

Ben nodded with a gestured smile. “Always pleased to be of service. It was a learning experience.” In all the exhilaration of the roller coaster ride and then seeing Alejandra again, he had forgotten that Davidson had promised to send over an accolade.

“And Sue. Our Ident folks said that you did a superior job securing the scene on our murder case. They recommended that you instruct all new field officers.”

“Thanks Corp,” Sue acknowledged.

“The Detachment Commander has directed that I place a commendation entry on both of your personnel files. Don’t let it go to your heads.”

Both of his patrol officers smiled in response.

“Now get out of my office. And keep the community safe tonight. No more dead bodies, please!”

“Yes, Corp,” both responded in harmony.

As they walked to the parking lot, Sue purposely bumped into her partner and uttered with a reassuring buoyant smile, “Bravo Zulu, partner. I looked that up on the web. If I’m not mistaken, I think that it means ‘well done’ in military jargon.”

Ben bowed in gratitude of her initiative to learn a little more about his military service. “Ack, partner, and same to you. Ack is a short-term for acknowledged.”

“And did you get to see Alejandra?”

Ben’s beaming palpable expression said it all.

“Glen got back to me. Glenda is back in town and wants to meet us on Lower Main Street around one. His message was terse. I’ll text Ralph and let him know that we’ll be late for our predictable ten after the hour caffeine and cholesterol break.”

“OK. But don’t forget that we are seeking the ninety-nine point nine eight per cent mind-numbing boring shift where we simply cut and paste the previous night patrol report,” Ben quipped with his signature baritone chuckle.

“Sir Ben has returned,” Sue mused. She was looking forward to receiving an update from the goddess of the night.

“Hello Glenda. Haven’t seen you around for a while.”

“Constable Archer, it’s good to see you too. Is this your new partner?”

“I’m Constable McLeod, Glenda.”

Once outside the audible orbit of other worshippers of Nyx who populate the shadows and creviced conclaves of the urban landscape, Glen brought Sue and Ben up to date.

“Kaplanski is on the ground in Cancun. He spent some time in Toronto reacquainting himself with a few of his old biker buddies. To set up his story, he explained to them that he had been in the Grand Caymans and Mexico establishing new business relationships for an import export enterprise, and was on his way back.
